Owen Brazell
23rd October 1957 – 16th March 2026
Owen was the loved and loving son of Hilary and the late Hugh Brazell, brother of Lorna, Derek and Clare, uncle of Babak, Shadi and Jaleh and greatly valued friend.
Born in Canada, Owen went to school in Nottinghamshire and university in Scotland before settling in Faringdon, Wiltshire. He was a valued team member of Schlumberger for 30 years, who travelled all over the world troubleshooting complex software systems for their global clients. He was an avid amateur astronomer known to all in the UK astronomy community through his column in Astronomy Now, and held in high esteem for his long term editorship of Deep Sky Observer magazine, chairmanship of the Webb Society, constant presence at star parties near and far, and frequent talks to astronomy groups up and down the country.
Owen is having a private family woodland burial. Following that, at 2pm on 24 April 2026 everyone is welcome to join Owen’s family at Jodrell Bank (www.jodrellbank.net) to reflect on his life and personality. Dress code, in honour of Owen’s personal style, is “come as you are comfortable”.
Family flowers only please. If you would like to make a donation in Owen’s memory please make it towards the work of the Barn Owl Trust (www.barnowltrust.org.uk/support-us).
If you are able to come please RSVP to Lorna on secretary@cambrian-mountains.co.uk so that numbers are known for catering. We would also appreciate if you have any photos of Owen to share.
